If February gives us an opportunity to consider our history and June gives us an excuse to celebrate our present, August provides space to acknowledge the fight it took to happen. Black August recognizes the lineage of rebellion and sacrifice, from the Haitian Revolution to the March on Washington.
This workshop invites Black poets to hold that history and ask a different question: what does the other side of liberation actually feel like? Not as a campaign event or call to action, but as simple and magnificent as life itself. In this creative writing session, we will ground ourselves in the legacy of Black August before engaging with the intention of imagination.
