As a part of the Academy Center of the Arts’ Artist in Residence program and Juneteenth Celebration, Nick George the Poet presents a screening of Summertime. Highlighting social emotional learning, entertaining, and educational elements, the evening will feature writing/discussion activities directly before and following the film.

Synopsis: Over the course of a hot summer day in Los Angeles, the lives of 25 young Angelenos intersect. A skating guitarist, a tagger, two wannabe rappers, an exasperated fast-food worker, a limo driver—they all weave in and out of each other’s stories. Through poetry they express life, love, heartache, family, home, and fear. One of them just wants to find someplace that still serves good cheeseburgers.

There is a reason that spoken word gets confused with rap so often. The two are deeply intertwined, and this session will peek at the patterns and relationship between performance poetry and the culture of hip-hop. As much as we will be talking about performance styles and your own personal techniques, we will also be diving into the poetic devices that we’re all familiar with how poetic hip-hop actually is.
